The indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea) is not a bird that frequently visits my garden; however, whenever one does appear, I stop everything to watch this beautiful and unusually-colored sparrow-sized bird. According to the National Audubon Society “Indigo Buntings have no blue pigment; they are actually black, but the diffraction of light through the structure of the feathers makes them appear blue.” [Bull and Farrand, p. 696] Photographs show these birds with brownish markings on their wings and tails. The indigo buntings I have seen at my feeders, however, have not displayed such markings. (Perhaps it was the angle from which the sunlight was hitting them, which made them appear to be completely blue.) Nevertheless, the bright turquoise-blue of the male indigo bunting is quite distinctive and eye-catching. The females do not have the unmistakable blue plumage, though. They are, instead, a brown color.
Indigo buntings are about 5½ inches in size. They have a high-pitched warble, with notes and phrases usually repeated twice. They can be found from southeastern Saskatchewan in Canada east to New Brunswick. They are found throughout the United States east of the Mississippi River, except for the southern part of Florida where they only winter. West of the Mississippi River, indigo buntings can be found along the Gulf Coast and in central Texas, as well as the southern to central parts of Arizona. They frequent woodland edges, agricultural areas, weedy and abandoned areas, thickets, and hedges. You might also find them in briar patches and in clearings made for utility poles.
The female indigo bunting will build a nest a few feet from the ground in briar patches, thickets, weed stems, canebreaks, and saplings. She will lay 2-6 white eggs during the breeding season. The eggs are incubated for 12-13 days. After hatching, the fledglings will leave the nest within 8-10 days.
Indigo buntings eat lots of insects, such as grasshoppers, caterpillars, cicadas, beetles, weevils, flies, cankerworms, and mosquitoes. This also makes them birds that are well-loved by farmers. In addition, they eat weed seeds, which helps farmers, as well. If you want to try to lure indigo buntings to your garden, you can fill your feeders with black oil sunflower seeds, millet, and safflower seeds. Indigo buntings are unusually beautiful birds. Their consumption of harmful insects and weed seeds also makes them even more welcome to any garden.

I remember when I was growing up that there was always a family of blue jays living in our backyard. I quickly fell in love with these large, beautiful blue birds. I am really pleased that several blue jays have made our current home theirs as well. As someone who loves gardening, I have also come to appreciate the wildlife — especially the birds, who can help keep down the population of bad bugs — that visit my gardens. However, not everyone feels the same about blue jays; but I believe that the bad reputation these birds have gained is not entirely deserved.
The blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a blue and white bird with black on the wings and tail and distinctive black markings on the face. They grow to 12 inches; however, there are a couple of blue jays that visit our house that I just know are larger. These crested birds range from east of the Rocky Mountains to the eastern coast of the United States and from southern Canada down to the Gulf of Mexico. Many reside permanently in the southeast portion of the United States where I live. They have numerous vocalizations, even one that is very hawk-like; but blue jays are best know for their loud jay, jay, jay calls. While they prefer to live in wooded areas, blue jays have adapted well to urbanization, as evidenced by the numerous visitors I have at my feeders in my front yard.
Blue jays prefer a diet mainly of large seeds, small berries, and nuts. I have noticed, too, that blue jays really like bread and especially pizza. They do, however, eat insects, worms, frogs, salamanders, small rodents and bats, and eggs from other birds’ nests. This last tendency is what has given them such a bad reputation. People just do not like the idea of another bird stealing eggs for food from a nest. It is also said that blue jays tend to dominate feeders and will chase off any other birds trying to have a meal. I have not noticed this behavior from any of the blue jays that visit our yard. They mingle quite nicely with the chickadees, cardinals, finches, titmice, and many other species that think of us as their personal diner.
In addition, I have no doubt that the other birds appreciate the fact that blue jays are the early warning system of the bird kingdom. Whenever a hawk appears – and they do quite often where we live – the blue jays will raise quite a ruckus. In fact, all the blue jays will fly to the area, with their distinctive loud calls, and summon other birds to help chase away the hawk. I have watched many a hawk trying desperately to escape from some large tree while what appears to be every bird in the county is after him.
Blue jays are also known as “tree planters.” They gather nuts, such as acorns, and will hide them in the ground. The forgotten nuts and seeds will eventually sprout and result in new trees in the areas. I wondered about this tendency until I saw a blue jay do just that in our front yard. He gathered a seed from under the feeders and hopped about the yard looking for a safe place. He eventually dropped it and then covered the seed with a leaf. (If anything, blue jays can be entertaining to watch.)
Blue jays build their nests in either large deciduous or conifer trees on large limbs or where a limb joins the trunk. The bulky nests are built of twigs, grasses, string, and any other available material. They lay 3-6 greenish-blue eggs with darker spots. The young generally leave the nest 17-21 days after hatching. I have seen fledgling blue jays, and they look absolutely prehistoric. They are not quite as big as their parents; however, what is especially noticeable at their young age is the lack of the crest on their heads. They have the look of a pterodactyl.
Blue jays can be very loud and raucous and might on occasion steal another bird’s eggs. However, you should encourage them to come to your feeders. They are especially nice to see around in the dreary winter months, when their flashy blue and white plumage brings some color to the gray days. The other birds will also probably thank you, because blue jays will help save them from hawks that would love to have them for dinner.

Powder Blue reminds a lot of people of the movie Crash. I haven’t seen Crash, but I have seen 11:14 and that’s what I think of when I watch it. However, 11:14 was much better, as I suspect Crash was as well. For me, Powder Blue was a disaster and waste of some great star power.
The main player is Jessica Biel, who plays a stripper. I don’t care for the stripper scenes at all; they just aren’t my style. About the only part of her storyline that I like is her devotion to her dog.
Ray Liotta and Forrest Whitaker didn’t impress me. Liotta just did that intense thing he’s been doing in films for a long time. I miss that charm that I used to see in his work.
I did enjoy, to an extent, Lisa Kudrow. Perhaps that is because she played probably the only happy, normal character in the entire, confusing production. Not even Kris Kristofferson held any magic for me.
To be honest, the only reason I watched Powder Blue is Patrick Swayze was in it. I must say that my reaction to seeing him was even more wild than seeing Bodhi in Point Break or Miss Vida in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. He sports a long, blond wig in this movie. His character runs the joint that Biel performs in. Basically, he’s a sleaze. He did a nice acting job, but when I want to watch Patrick, this isn’t the movie I’m going to pull out.
The movie goes back and forth in the timeline, and it just doesn’t work. There’s nothing really that I like about it.
