The Difference Between Clothes And Fashion

As a personal stylist I spend many hours reviewing wardrobes. Given the fact that we only wear a shocking 20% of what we buy, frankly most of my clients waste money. The buzz of buying translates into the unworn, there is nothing remotely glamorous about this. I have improved since I learned the difference between “clothes” and “fashion” and now wear most of my wardrobe until it wears out.

“Fashion” is last season’s sleeveless jacket. Hugely expensive, but did you ever see anyone wearing this?? This is a non garment too cold to be a jacket, too edgy to be worn often by most in public. “Fashion” is also the here today, gone tomorrow looks that reinvigorate your wardrobe. Shoes are a fantastic “fashion” statement and so are bags. Fashion should be fun!

We all need regular “fashion” hits but we should not pay too much for them. Remember the 80:20 rule, and do not pay over the odds for something you will wear only for a season or not at all. Buy the diffusion ranges or the better high street brands and look to wear for 2 seasons only.

Sometimes we are all hit with a “I will die if I don’t have that” and these instincts should be followed for the sheer fun occasionally but if you let them dominate your wardrobe you will have nothing to wear.

“Clothes” are what you actually wear 90% of the time so spend money on them, buy the best you can afford and look to keep them. A great beautiful coat in your style and colours will last 10 years so buy a more expensive one. The “fashionable” coat will last 4 months so don’t pay too much have fun with it buy a great colour and look to replace it.

“Clothes” are your signature style. Last summer when smocks were in most of my clients bought them, these are now part of the vast unworn in your wardrobe, along with the sleeveless jacket etc. “Clothes” should be items that you love deeply that you will wear for ever. Jackets, jewellery, coats, cashmere should not be dull but beautiful in rich colours. Fit is everything, buy for how you are now, not I might lose some weight or I am fat so I will buy a bigger size this does not work. Buy beautifully cut garments that flatter whatever shape or size you are.

If grey is in and it does not suit you don’t buy it. In short, learn what suits your body, learn what style you are and buy clothes that fit you. Baggy clothes generally don’t flatter and make you look fatter than you are. Go spend your money on fantastic must-have shoes instead or a great piece of jewellery and when things are in the shops that you love, that make your heart sing, that really really suit you, buy them. These will form a great wardrobe for many seasons to come. Aim to be beautiful and fabulous and you will be!

The colors of 2009 have been made official in the Pantone Fashion Color Reports- unaware that such a thing existed? You are in the right place, fashion color info is always changing and can be very overwhelming.  Here is a color breakdown because at least if you are wearing last seasons outfit you can wear this seasons colors!

2009 Summer/ Spring Colors to Wear

spring 2009 will bring a lot of new bright colors that will allow you to explore your creativity and fashion personality. Many of the bright feminine colors will be combined with more masculine looks TIP think 80′s shoulder pads. Spring 2009 colors allow a more whimsical look to grace the runways as seen in this Roberto Cavalli image from Spring-Summer Fashion Week 2009.

Pictured- model Maryna Linchuk wearing a salmon rose spring fashion color with a femenine paisley-like design. The 3-piece Roberto Cavalli ensemble has both feminine attributes- floral and salmon rose color; but this season structured and tailored masculine looks are strong. The mid-thigh lenghth blazer with shoulder pads adds more structure and masculinity to the more lighter spring-summer 2009 fashion.

2009 Fall/ Winter Colors to Wear

This Fall these colors are charming the runways with elegance and beauty. A selection of an appealing pastel palette, fashion colors that is obviously infused with elements of nature. Everyone from SoCal to Manhattan and across the pond have been going green with everything from  environmentally coucious totes to runway couture and these fall colors are earth, wind and fire inspired to say the least. They also have a deep look that can easily be paired with a brighter under layer to add a little element of surprise. Since layering is always big TIP layering of scarves and sweaters in fall colors with a bright-pop spring color underneath. Contrast and juxtapoistion. This fall you will see the use of bright items to set off the background of more earth tones.

As seen in the L’Wren Scott Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear collection bright colors add a much appreciated element of surprise to a conservative color look.

“When in doubt, wear red.”

Our love of diamonds and admiration of their fire and brilliance has given rise to many different cuts of diamonds. While we still see some of the earliest styles of diamond cuts – such as the round and emerald-cut, there are many more cuts today, some of them patented by their designers and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The most popular cut for a diamond ring today is still the round, brilliant cut. It was developed in the 17th century in Venice. It is still preferred when the raw crystal is in an octahedron formation. Even though as much as 50% of the stone is cut away in the process, often two stones can be carved from an octahedron. More unusually-shaped stones are used for fancy cuts, such as a marquise, pear or heart-shaped diamond. The earliest brilliants had 17 facets on the top of the stone and were called double-cut. This was soon improved with stones cut with 33 facets and were called triple-cut brilliants.

In the 19th century, with the development of better gem-cutting tools, more innovations in diamond cutting styles were developed. In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky combined the art of cutting with the science of light and refraction and published his book, Diamond Design. These relatively recent geometric calculations were the forerunner of much of diamond cutting work today and led to other, more precise mathematical models engineered to enhance the fire and brilliance of diamonds.

There are now cuts such as the princess cut, trillions, ovals, pear and heart-shaped. Some innovative cutters have even fashioned star or butterfly-shaped diamonds! One patented cut, the Ashoka diamond, is an oblong cut with rounded, brilliant ends, and requires a stone 3 carats or larger. It’s an exceptionally beautiful (and pricey!) diamond shape. Tiffany has also patented a cut of diamond called the Lucida cut. It’s the lucky bride whose fiancé gives her one of these highly coveted stones!

There is an enormous buzz around our nation, and even perhaps around the world, about what Michelle Obama will wear to the inauguration today.  It’s an amazing piece of a historic event – the role that FASHION will play – and rightfully so.  The endless newsreels playing for the last few weeks have been looking back at past first ladies and the styles and colors of their inaugural ensembles.  And, of course, in this case, there are two little girls to “ooh and ahh” over as well.  What a day to be a dress maker!

By now, if you were up early, you saw Michelle Obama leave her (very) temporary residence in a golden yellow brocade dress with a matching long jacket and long silk scarf – smiling and waving to news crews as she entered St. John’s Church in Washington DC with her husband – the 44th president of our country.  It felt like every news channel you turned to did a critique of her outfit – how it seemed to match the color of the church – that it was a “happy” color and embraced Mrs. Obama’s joie de vivre when it comes to fashion.  That it was classic, and yet still her own.  (Who can forget the amount of commentary about her daring black and red ensemble on the night of the election?)

I, for one, love the acknowledgement that the media is giving to fashion today.  For those of us in the clothing industry – from fabric designers, to boutique owners, to seamstresses and tailors and factory workers – well, this is a really great day for us.  We are center stage all day today – and we know it!

But truthfully, we know something that everyone else might NOT know.  We are center stage EVERY day – and it’s not just for the big occasions.  (Okay, we don’t all have an inaugural ball to go to, but we all have those once-in-a-lifetime events – like weddings and proms – where we have that “perfect” dress that gets a million photographs.)  Rather, it’s the smaller occasions where WE know that we literally make or break people.  It’s the first date with the best looking guy in the office.  (And it’s the dinner where you meet his parents.)  It’s every single day that you go to work.  What we do matters.  It really matters.  We are literally the thread that ties us all together, from generation to generation.

Clothing isn’t just something to buy, wear, and toss away.  Be sure to save those special pieces to hand down to your daughters and nieces.  Fashion has a way of coming around again and again (can you say skinny jeans?).   And what doesn’t come around becomes great stuff for school plays and Halloweens (poodle skirts and white leisure suits, anybody?).  For plus size women, there’s also the tremendous honor of having some great fashion in the right size when the young women in your life are struggling – both financially and with their identities.  Even plus size women like Oprah Winfrey have shared that finding the right dress in her size has driven her to tears on the MOST special occasions, like the Emmy’s.

You will be more than the hero when you have that gorgeous plus size little black dress for someone’s special New Year’s Eve – or a beautiful plus size blouse to accent a great suit for that big interview.  As plus size women, we KNOW how important it is to dress to impress and dress for success!  Having those special wardrobe pieces to pass down is pretty wonderful.

I have visions of Michelle Obama’s daughters, one day in the far future, unwrapping beautiful dresses from some treasured garment bag wrapped carefully in tissue paper, and saying to their own daughters, “This is the dress your grandmother wore to meet the King of England, and this is what she wore when she met the President of France.”  Our clothing is far more than what it seems; it’s part of our life story.  So the next time you have a great dress that you adore, take a picture of yourself in it at the occasion and then, when you save that dress and wrap it carefully in tissue, throw the picture in the box too.  We aren’t all “The First Lady” but we ARE all part of a very intimate history to be treasured as part of our own legacy.

There are a lot of women who just love to buy designer clothes despite the fact that these are expensive. If you own a clothing retail shop or a boutique, you will be able to generate more income when you choose to sell women’s clothing. This is due to the fact that the females are very particular with their outfits. They like to shop for the most fashionable clothes. They will never go for a garment which is not considered a trend for the current season. In order for you to attract more lady customers, you should always supply your store with stylish and chic clothes. Just the thought of having to buy designer clothing will probably give you the idea that your business will go down the drain. But this is not true, what with the huge number of manufacturers offering wholesale fashion clothing.

Recently, there are several fashion wholesale companies which are catering to the needs of fashion retailers and wholesalers. You can find them within your country and internationally. One of these international clothing wholesalers is CausewayMall, which is also a wholesale online shopping mall. This manufacturer is based in Hong Kong, and it offers Japan & Korea fashion clothing. The design and the style of the apparel which the company sells are based on the fashion of Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and other foreign countries. Being an international Hong Kong clothing wholesaler, Causeway Mall markets its clothing internationally. Whether your shop is found in the United Kingdom or the United States, you will be able to shop for its wholesale women clothing. This is one advantage which you can get from this fashion wholesaler.

Choosing to purchase wholesale women’s apparel at CausewayMall.com will allow you to reap benefits which are not provided by other clothing suppliers. One of the most important benefits that you can get from this Korea fashion online store is the opportunity to buy designer clothes wholesale for a low price. When you order in bulk, you will be able to avail of clothing supplies wholesale at a discounted price. Despite the economic costs of this manufacturer’s clothing, the quality of the clothes is still competitive. You are assured that what you are buying is relative to the price, and you are not going to suffer from paying huge in prices. With great budget prices, it will not be difficult for you to supply your boutique with wholesale fashion clothes in lower cost. When you shop for Asian fashion wholesale clothing at CausewayMall, you will be able to save more.

CausewayMall aims to provide its clients with reliable service. This is due to its belief in maintaining constant good relationship with its clients to keep them shopping for more women clothes wholesale. Whether you want to buy junior wholesale clothing or wholesale dresses, you will be able to find the best styles and designs at CausewayMall. You should not let this opportunity pass if you want to keep your customers from turning to other shops.

Jayde Johanssen asked:

Finally, the weather’s changing and with it come new styles and trends. Last year’s summer fashions were a classic return to some more minimal and high-class looks, and this year promises to be an exciting miss of poise and grace as well as yet another 80s revival, only this time, with denim. How not to get lost in the shifting tides of style? We’ll, we’ve got the inside scoop on all of the season’s best fashion. Don’t forget to pay attention, or else it could be a cruel, cruel summer when you’re noticeably a season behind.

Last year, it was all about the gold, the greens, and the 1980s. Yes, there was a retreat to a more minimal look and less patterns, and apparently that classic 1950s Coco Chanel influence is going to continue on this season, at the same time that younger designers insist on bringing back denim. And this isn’t any run-of-the-mill denim resurrection, this is serious hair-metal, ripped-jeans-to-go-with-schrunchies denim. With even the young hipsters suffering from a bit of ’80s fatigue, it might be best to explore other routes of the season’s hottest trends.

If there’s one thing worth getting this summer, it’s a single-shoulder dress. They’re skyrocketing in popularity, and they’re actually cute, too. If you really want to do it right and have the budget, get one daytime single-shouldered dress that’s in a lighter material and perfect for breezy days at the beach or in the park, and then get a more formal evening option that can carry over into the first hint of fall.

One thing that you don’t have to wear and that will hopefully have died out this year are the baggy diaper pants that seemed to take everywhere by storm last season. This year, it seems that most women have realized that this style didn’t look remotely good on MC Hammer, and isn’t going to flatter a woman’s body anytime soon, either.

But I’ll tell you what will be a serious hit all season–gold and silver. Not as jewelry, but as colors in your wardrobe, especially in exciting belts. Yes, belts will be the accessory of choice this summer, whether thrown onto a high-waisted dress or used to tie a smart pants suit together are an exciting new way to mix up an outfit.

Traditional accessories that were a huge hit on the runway this season were a more tolerable version of 1980s inspiration. Upscale bangles are a huge hit, and make a great accessory when it comes to wearing a more plain outfit. They’re bold, they’re made out of all possible materials to match your fabric, and they won’t break the bank but they’ll leave their mark.

One trend we’re all hoping and praying catches on this summer is a lack of fake baking. Yes, far too many celebrities have shown up to premiers looking like Oompa Loompas, and it’s time for the general public to heed the warning of the season–if you can’t make it happen lounging on a chair outside for a couple of hours, it doesn’t mean you need to lather yourself in nasty skin-dying oils or have a go at a tanning bed. Looking like a rotisserie chicken is one definite fashion don’t for this summer, as it will totally ruin your other fashion forward moves!

No matter if you’re planning on stocking up on all of the hottest items of this season or only have a little bit to spend to make your wardrobe just slightly more fabulous, it’s going to be easy to look hot and feel hot this summer. Get a few new things in your closet and you’re certain to feel like a million bucks the minute you have your first summer weekend. Here’s to hoping all of your summer fashion dreams come true.

In the days dating back to the 17th century A.D., it was customary for both the girls and boys to attend dame-schools at an earlier age itself. The young girls were not normally exposed to book learning aspects. Instead, they were taught topics like ‘how to be a good housewife’ and aspects related to that. They were imparted training on matters related to cooking, spinning, weaving and knitting. The stitching works were not only meant for creating clothes meant for domestic purposes but also for commercial establishments like shops. Expert knitting was a well paid job, and would constitute a matter of pride to the creator or the knitter. The girls were taught many types of stitching works including sophisticated and complicated stitches. The herring-bone stitch design was one type of a fashion pattern that was popular among people. Other styles include the fox and the geese knitting patterns.

Initially, these young girls were taught to produce fashion trends by having the initials knit into stockings and mittens. The English alphabets also were knit into stockings and mittens, and some people would even make verses of poetry that used to arouse the curiosity of people. These young girls also learnt fine embroidery work; fashion purses were decorated with fine embroidery work and were sold in the nearby shops. Another trend in fashion came in the form of making paper flowers, and this was known as Papyrotamia. They were also imparted training on how to paint fine art on velvet stuffs. The girls in the country sides also learned the art of quilt piecing and they would make hundreds of difficult and variety designs. They knew how to make bone lace with the help of pillows and bobbins.

In the case of young boys, they were imparted education in, along with other subjects, Latin Grammar also. The Victorian period of 1837-1869 ushered in a new fashion trend aimed at women. The beauty of women was assessed by the curves they had, which enhanced the femininity in them. The well-designed corset that women used to wear during those times helped them create the curves they had wanted. The fashion corset underwent changes in designs and went a step further during the late Victorian period of 1850-1900. Curves on women were shaped up by tightly lacing them into these corsets. The best vital statistics was fixed at 18 inches for the waist, and this became the norm and the latest fashion trend. This particular style was known at that time as the hourglass figure.

Things began to change in the 20th Century A.D. Young women began attending college and university and began to vie with men for various jobs in different fields. The first hurdle they faced was in the area of Company wage structure. Women found it difficult to compete with men because women doing the same work received considerably less amount as wages. The equality or parity for women in all walks of life had still not made its arrival on the scene. Men were considered the superior ones as compared to the female of the species in the professional area also.

This spring you don’t need to be a would-be mother like Gwen Stefani or Jessica Alba to wear a tunic top. Also it doesn’t need to brave a chilling winter every time you wear a tunic top, though many fashion lovers prefer it as a must for winter wardrobes. Definitely, they are inspired by its ability to cover you from your neck to your knees.

In fact, you just need to wait for the coming spring 2009 and you will find yourself amid a huge selection of exclusively designed spring fashion tunic tops. There are floral tunics. There are satin tunics. There are silk tunics. Thus you you have got a variety of tunic tops in terms of colors, styles and fabrics.

Here are some tips on how to wear tunic tops this spring in different styles and look fashionable.

Floral Tunic With Jeans : Wearing a pair of jeans along with a floral tunic top can be a real eyeopener for both your male and female colleagues. Skin-fit jeans can be the most suitable. Try to pair such jeans with any floral tunic of your choice. I can recommend you to go for a lemon yellow tunic top, full of pink floral prints, with a deep blue skinny jeans. Use sunglasses along with a pearl necklace and high heels or wedges.

Satin Tunic With Wide-legged Trousers : Satin will rule this spring, so will the tunic. Hence, look out for something which combines them(satin and tunic) together. Choose a wide-legged trouser in classic black. Select a satin top dipped in any of the top ten spring colors by Pantone. Wear a red boot, use a designer belt and wrap a white scarf. Don’t forget the sunglasses.

Red Silky Tunic With Metallic Skirts : Metallic fashion was a rage in the second half of 2008. This rage has crept into 2009 too. So it would be worth thousand gold coins to slide into a metallic skirt. A red tunic made of silk will be a perfect choice with some embroidery on its neckline and sleeves. Knee-length tunics are strictly prohibited, if you are wearing a metallic short skirt. Instead, a waist-length tunic will be the most appropriate choice with such skirts. And lastly, wear flats, wedges or slingbacks.

Mid-length Stretch Cotton Tunics : With comfortable stretch cotton tunics, the gentle feeling of the spring will be doubled. Go for a mid-length tunic in any hue such as traditional black, raunchy red or inspiring sky blue. Such colorful tunics are always compatible with all types of pants, trousers, skirts and designer or ripped jeans equally. Pair them with ballet flats, heels or sandals. Use a big shoulder bag with golden shade.

Embroidered Long-sleeved Tunics : Wearing an embroidered long-sleeve tunic will be greatly flattering for you, if you want to add few inches to your height. You can even get a tunic made of shimmering fabric, which has a handful of embroidery, for lawn parties during cold spring nights. Wear metallic footwear and skinny jeans along with it.

Button Down Tunic : You may also call them, more clearly, as button down tunic shirts. Usually, such knee-length tunics are made of satin. So they are perfect for parties. You may prefer to use them without trousers too. Wear wedges or ballet flats. Choose a red button down tunic added with a black belt. Carry a matching handbag.

Want to change the way you look? Want some trendy clothes for the season? Never seem to know what to buy and what will look good on you? Hire the services of a fashion stylist.

Fashion stylist – a word unheard of till recently – is one of the emerging professions in the fashion world globally. Who is a fashion stylist? A ‘fashion stylist’, as the name suggests, works with fashion trends to create a distinct style for a particular individual. The individual can be anyone from a model or a celebrity to a pressed-for-time business person or just anyone who wishes to create a distinct image of himself or herself.

Tasks such as keeping track of the latest trends in fashion, maintaining a network of contacts, deciding what would look good on people, finding suitable dresses and accessories and either hiring or purchasing them, helping people build a wardrobe as well as dressing up people fall under the purview of a fashion stylist.

The services of fashion stylists are generally employed by newspapers, magazines and advertising agencies. In this case, they are required to dress up the models for shoots. A major part of the job involves planning what would look good on each model, deciding from where to buy or hire these dresses and accessories depending on the budget, bringing them to the shoot and actually dressing up the models. They are in charge of generating the kind of image that the newspaper, magazine or advertising agency wishes to portray.

Fashion stylists are also used by celebrities like actors, singers and television hosts. Such stylists are typically referred to as ‘celebrity stylists’. Their job is to create a distinct image for the celebrity. This may be related to just a particular movie or show or an image change in general. The Oscar-winning Bollywood actresses Meryl Streep and Halle Berry owe their glamorous look to stylist Wayne Scot Lucas. In Hollywood too, fashion designer Manish Malhotra turned fashion stylist for Bollywood actresses Karisma Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee to give them a new look. He worked with both of them and transformed them from just talented actresses to trend-setting starlets.

There is another class of fashion stylists, who are referred to as ‘personal stylists’ or ‘image consultants’. They work with individuals who need a makeover, a complete change of image. Many businesspersons are going in for the services of personal stylists today to build up a different image. Personal stylists work in close proximity with their clients to determine which style would suit them the most.
